Patriot’s Day (or P
atriots’ Day) commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord\, which we
re fought near Boston in 1775. Patriot’s Day is annually held on the third
Monday of April. It should not be confused with Patriot Day\, held on September 1
1 to mark the anniversary of terrorist attacks in the USA in 2001.
For some people in the states of Massachusetts and Maine\, the
third Monday of April is a welcome day off work or school. In the area ar
ound Lexington and Concord\, re-enactments of the battles in 1775 and the
events leading up to them are held. A particular highlight is the opportun
ity to ring the bell that warned the local troops that British soldiers we
re approaching. Lectures\, concerts and road races are also organized.
\n
In the state of Wisconsin\, April 19 is a special observance day for
schools. On this date\, schools are required to educate students about the
events and people centered on Patriots’ Day. It is recommended that the o
bservances are held on the actual date\, although they are generally moved
to Friday\, April 18\, if April 19 is a Saturday and to Monday\, April 20
\, if April 19 falls on a Sunday.

Public Life
\n
Patriots’
Day is a state holiday in Massachusetts and Maine\, where state\, county\,
and municipal offices are closed. However\, Patriots’ Day is not a federa
l public holiday and federal offices are open. Many schools are closed for
the spring break. Stores and other businesses and organizations may be op
en or closed according to local custom. Most public transit services run t
o reduced schedules\, but may not operate in rural areas. There may be som
e local disruption to traffic around the re-enactments and sports events\,
particularly in Boston.
\n
If Patriots’ Day and Tax Day fall on the
same date\, the deadline for filing an income tax return is extended for t
he residents of some states. Patriots’ Day is not a public holiday in othe
r parts of the United States.

Background
\n
Prior to 1775\,
the area that is now the eastern part of the United States mainly consist
ed of British colonies controlled by the United Kingdom. The American Revo
lutionary War\, also known as the American War of Independence\, was a maj
or step in the independence of the United States. The first battles in thi
s war were fought in the areas of Lexington and Concord\, near Boston\, Ma
ssachusetts\, on April 19\, 1775. For this reason\, the third Monday in Ap
ril is symbolic for the emerging independence of the new country.
\n
Paul Revere is among the patriots who are remembered on Patriot’s Day. The
American silversmith is known for spreading the word of the Boston Tea Pa
rty to New York and Philadelphia\, and for warning the Lexington Minutemen
about the British invasion in 1775. The story of his “midnight” ride to L
exington to discuss action plans against the British has been poeticized.<
/p>\n
An act to amend the Tennessee code regarding Patriot’s Day took ef
fect in 2008. The state’s code now officially includes the holiday and men
tions that its governor proclaims April 19 of each year as Patriot’s Day.
This day is still not a public holiday in Tennessee. Patriots’ Day is also
known as Patriot’s Day and Patriots Day. However\, it should not be confu
sed with Patriot Day\, held on September 11 to mark the anniversary of ter
rorist attacks in the United States on that date in 2001.
National D
ay of Prayer calls on all people of different faiths in the United States
to pray for the nation and its leaders. It is held on the first Thursday o
f May each year.
Through the effor
ts of the National Day of Prayer Task Force\, more than 35\,000 prayer gat
herings will be conducted by about 40\,000 volunteers across the United St
ates. Several million people are expected to participate in this call to p
rayer. Some celebrities\, such as popular musician and Grammy Award winner
Ricky Skaggs\, will join millions of Americans in praying for the nation.
\n
Other events in various communities across the United States may
include: choirs and bands performing songs relating to prayer\; community
prayer breakfasts or luncheons\; daytime prayer walks\; and evening worshi
p and prayer services or gatherings. National Day of Prayer is a time for
people of all faiths to pray together in their own way.
\n

National Day of Prayer is not a public holiday. Schools\, post
offices\, stores and other businesses and organizations are open as usual

Background
\n
In 1775
the Continental Congress allocated a time for prayer in forming a new nat
ion. Over the years\, there have been calls for a day of prayer\, includin
g from President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. On April 17\, 1952\, President H
arry Truman signed a bill proclaiming the National Day of Prayer into law
in the United States. President Reagan amended the law in 1988\, designati
ng the first Thursday of May each year as the National Day of Prayer.
\n
The National Prayer Committee was formed in the United States in 1972
. It went on to create the National Day of Prayer Task Force\, with the in
tended purpose of coordinating events for the National Day of Prayer. Acc
ording to the Legal Information Institute\, the President shall issue each
year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National D
ay of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in p
rayer and meditation at churches\, in groups\, and as individuals.

atriot Day 2018\, also referred to as 9/11 or September 11\, is a holiday
observed annually on September 11. It is a day dedicated to remembering an
d paying tribute to the 2\,977 people killed and numerous people who were
injured during the terrorist attacks on September 11\,2001\, in New York\,
Washington DC and Shanksville\, Pennsylvania\, in the United States. This
holiday should not be confused with Patriots’ Day: the anniversary of the
beginning of the American Revolution and the holiday celebrated in Massac
husetts\, Maine\, and other states.

History of Patriot Day
\n
On September 11\, 2001\, four jet planes were hijacked. The hijackers t
hen deliberately flew three of the planes into the New York World Trade Ce
ntre and the Pentagon in Arlington\, Virginia\, causing the deaths of 2\,9
77 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Wa
shington DC\, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control an
d it crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. These attacks\,
because of the loss of life and damage caused\, form the biggest act of t
errorism ever on United States soil.
\n
The attacks did not only have
an immense economic impact on the United Sates but additionally brought i
ncreased attention to national security. This has had huge implications fo
r United States national and international politics (particularly for the
relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middl
e East).
\n
Patriot Day 2018 is recognized by United States law as th
e official day of remembrance for these tragic events\, and has been obser
ved every year since the attacks. Although the attacks took place within t
he United Stated\, the shock and grief experienced in response to the atta
cks was shared throughout the world\, and for this reason Patriot Day 2018
will be observed\, not only in America\, but across the world.

raditions of Patriot Day 2018
\n
Traditionally\, Patriot Day 2018 is
viewed as a time of honor and remembrance. Annually\, on this day\, Ameri
can flags are flown at half-staff. The United State President asks fellow
Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8.46am (Eastern Daylight Time)
\, the time of the first plane collision into the North Tower of the World
Trade Centre.
\n
Even though Patriot Day 2018 is not a federal holid
ay\, some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers
for the victims of the attacks\, but these do not usually affect public li
fe for more than a few minutes.
Halloween 2018 (also known as Allhalloween\, All Hall
ows’ Eve\, or All Saints’ Eve) occurs on the day before All Saints Day. It
is a day that is dedicated to remembering the dead\, including saints (ha
llows)\, martyrs\, and all the faithful departed. Halloween 2018 is a holi
day celebrated annually on October 31 in the United States and throughout
the world.

History of Halloween
\n
It is “widely believed”
that Halloween originated from the ancient Celtic harvest festival\, Samha
in\, and that this Gaelic observance was Christianized by the early Church
. Samhain festivals are said to have also had pagan roots. Some argue\, ho
wever\, that Halloween began independently of Samhain and has solely Chris
tian origins. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is a t
ime when magic is most powerful and spirits can make contact with the phys
ical world.

In Christian times\, it became a celebration of the ev
ening before All Saints’ Day. It is believed that the celebration of Hallo
ween only made its way to the United States (from being widely celebrated
in Northern Europe) in the 19th Century by immigrants from Scotland and Ir
eland.

The commercialization of Halloween (as we know it today) be
gan in the 1900s\, when postcards and die-cut paper decorations were produ
ced. Halloween costumes started to appear in stores in the 1930s and the c
ustom of ‘trick-or-treat’ appeared in the 1950s. Halloween 2018 now become
a very profitable holiday for the manufacturers of holiday celebration it
ems.

Traditions of Halloween

Halloween 2018 has historic
al roots in religious and cultural traditions. In many parts of the world\
, the Christian religious observances of Halloween 2018 include the attend
ing of church services and the lighting of candles on the graves of the de
ad. Some Christians historically abstain from meat (a tradition reflected
in the eating of certain foods on this vigil day. Additionally it has long
been celebrated in a secular manner as well. Modern traditions of the hol
iday include attending Halloween costume parties\, lighting bonfires\, tri
ck-or-treating\, decorating and carving pumpkins\, apple bobbing and divin
ation games\, playing pranks\, visiting haunted attractions\, telling scar
y stories and watching horror films.
Thanksgiving 2018 (also known as Thanksgiving D
ay) is an important federal holiday\, celebrated annually on the fourth Th
ursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving 2018 precedes “Black
Friday” and is traditionally a holiday to give thanks for the food collec
ted at the end of the harvest season.

History of Thanksgiving
\n
In September 1620\, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth\
, England\, carrying 102 passengers embarked on a journey to discover the
New World. After a treacherous journey lasting 66 days\, they arrived near
the tip of Cape Cod\, far north of their intended destination at the mout
h of the Hudson River. One month later\, the Mayflower crossed Massachuset
ts Bay\, where the Pilgrims\, as they are now commonly known\, began the w
ork of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal wi
nter\, most of the colonists remained on board the ship\, where they suffe
red from exposure\, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half
of the Mayflower’s original passengers lived to see their first New Englan
d spring. In March\, the remaining settlers moved ashore and began to harv
est with help and alliance with Native Americans of the area. This allianc
e tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European
colonists and Native Americans.
\n
In November 1621\, after the Pilgr
ims’ first corn harvest proved successful\, Governor William Bradford orga
nized a three-day celebratory feast\, now remembered as American’s “First
Thanksgiving”- although\, it is argued that the Pilgrims themselves may no
t have used the term “Thanksgiving” at the time. Historians also argue tha
t the Pilgrims had their first true thanksgiving in 1623\, when they gave
thanks for rain that ended a drought. In the second half of the 1600s\, th
anksgivings after the harvest became more common and started to become ann
ual events. George Washington\, the first president of the United States\,
proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1789 and it officially
became an annual holiday in 1863.
\n
Traditions of Thanksgiving
\n
Although Thanksgiving 2018 has historical roots in religious and cult
ural traditions\, it has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well.
Thanksgiving 2018 is a time for many people to give thanks for what they
have. Presently\, it has become a day for families and friends to get toge
ther for a special meal. The meal often includes a turkey\, stuffing\, pot
atoes\, cranberry sauce\, gravy\, pumpkin pie\, and vegetables. Volunteeri
ng is a common Thanksgiving Day 2018 activity\, and communities often hold
food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. Parades have al
so become an important part of the holiday in cities and towns across the
United States.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of
Holy Week and is an important Christian festival around the world. It fall
s on the Sunday before Easter Sunday and is therefore\, like Easter\, a mo
veable feast (i.e. a religious celebration or observance which does not oc
cur on the same date each year). Western Christian churches often refer to
Palm Sunday as ‘The Sunday of the Passion’\, while Orthodox Christian chu
rches may call the festival ‘The Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem’.
\n<
p>Palm Sunday is a commemoration of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem\
, coming in peace and riding on a donkey. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem coin
cided with the Jewish festival of Passover. He was met by crowds of follow
ers and supporters who lined the road into the city and waved branches cut
from palm trees. They laid palm fronds on the road and even laid down clo
aks for Jesus to ride over. This entry into Jerusalem fulfilled the Old Te
stament prophecies promising that God’s Messiah would enter the holy city
and go to the temple.\n
Palm Sunday church services typically start
with a procession of churchgoers carrying branches (often of willow or pus
sy willow) and palms. The service may include a Dramatization of the Passi
on. Small crosses\, each made of a single palm frond\, are blessed and dis
tributed to everyone in the congregation. Additional crosses are kept unti
l the following year when they are burned to make the ashes for Ash Wednes
day observances. A few churches also maintain the ancient tradition of dis
tributing small biscuit-like cakes\, called Pax Cakes\, which are marked w
ith a lamb as a symbol of peace and goodwill. Palm fronds may be used as a
ltar and other church decorations. Children often play a prominent role in
Palm Sunday services.

immediately preceding Easter Sunday\, commemorates the crucifixion and dea
th of Jesus Christ

Good Friday (from the meanings “pious”
\, “holy” of the word “good”) is a religious holiday observed primarily by
Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at
Calvary (Golgotha). The holiday is observed during Holy Week on the Frida
y preceding Easter Sunday\, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of
Passover. It is also known as Black Friday\, Holy Friday\, Great Friday\,
or Easter Friday\, though the latter correctly refers to the following Fr
iday (the Friday in Easter Week).
\n
Good Friday is a public holiday
in many countries but not in the United States.

s the end of the 40 days of Lent. Easter Sunday (or simply Easter Day) is
the first day of the Easter Week which ends on Easter Saturday.

Ch
rist’s resurrection forms the basis of Christian faith as it demonstrates
Jesus to be the Son of God\, and symbolizes his conquest of death.
\nThe Easter Story\n
According to the Gospels
it was at sunrise on the first Easter Day – the 3rd day following Jesus’
death – that the women who followed Jesus found the great stone blocking h
is tomb had been rolled away\, and the tomb empty. The Gospel of John (20.
14-16) relates how Mary Magdalene meets Jesus by the tomb\, but does not a
t first recognise him\, taking him to be a gardener. Finally realising tha
t he has indeed risen from the dead\, as he had promised he would\, she ru
ns to tell the disciples the good news.
\n
These events fulfil the pr
ophecy that ‘The Son of Man must be handed over to sinful men\, be crucifi
ed\, and three days later rise to life.’ (Luke 24.7).
\n
Easter is re
lated to the Jewish festival of Pesach (Passover).
\n
How is the date of Easter calculated?
\n
Easter is a ‘moveab
le feast’\, which means that its date is not fixed in the calendar\, but i
s instead calculated according to the lunar calendar\, formalised in Eccle
siastical date tables. It is based on the date of the vernal equinox. In A
D 325 the Council of Nicaea decreed that Easter always falls on the first
Sunday after the first full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equino
x. The date of Easter Sunday can thus fall between March 22 and April 25.
The date of Orthodox Easter (also known as Pascha) as celebrated in Easter
n Christianity is the same as Easter in some years\, but differs in other
years.
Memorial Day 2019 formally known as Decoration Day\, is a federal holiday
observed yearly on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day 2019 is a day that
commemorates all men and women who have died while serving in the militar
y for the United States of America.

History of Memorial Day
\n
The history of Memorial Day 2019 dates back to the American Civil War
. It started as an event to honour soldiers who had died during the war. I
t is said to be inspired by the way people in the Southern states honoured
the dead. The original national celebration of Decoration Day took place
on 30 May 1868. There was over twenty four cities and towns across the Uni
ted States that claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo (New
York) was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President
Lyndon Johnson in May 1966. In the late 19th century\, the holiday (previo
usly known as Decoration Day) became known as Memorial Day and was expande
d to include the deceased veterans of all the wars fought by American forc
es. Originally\, the holiday used to be celebrated on May 30\, regardless
of the day of the week that it fell on. In 1968\, the Uniform Holidays Bil
l was passed and as a result the day changed.
\n
Traditions of Memor
ial Day
\n
Traditionally Memorial Day is viewed as a time of honour
and remembrance. Throughout the United States it is common to visit cemete
ries\, particularly military ones\, and decorate graves of the deceased wi
th flowers\, small flags and wreathes. Other common traditions of Memorial
Day 2019 that are still practiced today include the raising the U.S. flag
quickly to the tops of flagpoles\, slowly lowered to half-mast\, and then
it is raised again to full height at noon. The lowering of the flag at ha
lf-mast is meant to honour the fallen soldiers who have died for their cou
ntry over the years. While re-raising the flag is meant to symbolize the r
esolve of the living to carry on the fight for freedom so that the nation’
s heroes will not have died in vain. On the United States Capitol Building
’s West Lawn\, a Memorial Day concert is held annually and is broadcasted
live around the country. Additionally\, there are thousands of Memorial Da
y 2019 parades all across the country in cities small and large. Many will
wear or put on a display of red poppies on this day as a symbol of fallen
soldiers. This tradition grew out of the famous poem by Canadian John McC
rae known as ‘In Flander’s Fields’\, where Moina Michael conceived an idea
to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honour of those who died serving t
he nation during war.
