40 Days In The Word Campaign Kick’s Off

As a youngster, one of the first songs I learned in Sunday School was based on the parable Jesus told in Matthew chapter 7, about the wise man who build his house upon the rock. Maybe you remember it as well. It went something like this:

The wise man built his house upon the rock.

The wise man built his house upon the rock.

The wise man built his house upon the rock.

And the rains came tumbling down.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

And the house on the rock stood firm.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand.

The foolish man built his house upon the sand.

And the rains came tumbling down.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

The rains came down and the floods came up.

And the house on the sand went smash.

We would sing the chorus with appropriate hand motions, and then our Sunday School teacher would ask, “Children, who was the rock on which the wise man built his house?” And, we would shout, “Jesus!”

But you know, the teacher asked the wrong question. The question she should have asked was, “What is the rock on which the wise built his house?” Because Jesus in Matthew 7:24 says,

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like that wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matthew 7:24 NIV

In other words, Jesus said that His Word is the rock on which we must build our lives. We realize of course that you cannot separate the words of Christ from Christ Himself, because the Word of Christ reveals the person of Christ to us, and He in that sense is truly our rock. But, Jesus cannot be known, God cannot be fully known apart from the spoken and now written Word of God. The Christ of the Bible, God’s Son, and the Bible which reveals Him is the one true unchanging certainty in a world that is now changing faster than any of us can keep pace. We need a constant and sure foundation upon which to build our lives, to stand strong against the rip currents of life’s uncertainties.

So this week we are kicking off our 40 Days in the Word Campaign, a campaign designed to help you build your life on the Bible. Why not join us at Greenwoods Community Church for the next six Sundays as we seek to search the Scriptures, and to apply its principles to our lives. You will not regret coming!
